There are about 200 species and numerous cultivars of this genus but nearly all have an unexcelled tropical allure. The large-leafed, tropical and banana-like foliage combines with the multicolored flowers and bracts to create luminous color and graceful form.
All species need rich soil, regular irrigation and no frost. Most can thrive in sun, but some are understory plants that need partial shade. Do not plant these plants where they will be exposed to freezing temperatures.
