6' - 8' height, 25 gallon pot - Bismarckia nobilis 'Silver'
The large stiff symmetrical fronds of Bismarck palm make it one of the outstanding fan palms for tropical or subtropical landscapes. The blue or silver form of this palm goes well with the hot colors of the tropics. This is a large palm with a spread almost as great as a Royal Palm. Moreover, the density of the canopy is much greater than that of a Royal, therefore, the palm has an imposing appearance and should be used at an appropriate scale.
Bismarck Palms can be grown in full sun or partial shade in soils ranging from clay to sand anywhere in Florida south of Lake Okeechobee, but be careful not to plant in locations which are poorly drained. Bismarcks can be grown near the ocean. They are quite drought tolerant when established.
Container-grown Bismarck Palms can be and have been planted with great success. However, as Bismarck Palms have become more popular larger field grown specimens have been planted. Bismarcks are very susceptible to transplant shock when dug from the field. For this reason we have developed very specific requirements for the handling of this palm.
For best growth fertilize this palm with a fertilizer specifically formulated for palms at the rate of 3-4 times per year. The palm is highly drought tolerant, but grows well in irrigated landscapes.
