Baldcypress is not a true Cypress, but is related to the Redwoods of California. It shares the size and longevity of its relatives. This species has the greatest longevity and size of all trees native to the eastern United States. Its precise longevity is a matter of some dispute, but undoubtedly extends to well over 1000 years. The largest specimen in Florida, the Senator Baldcypress, is reputed to be 3000 years old and has a diameter of 17'. The "Senator" was well over 160' in height until a hurricane of the 1920's took off the top 30'. Most of the "large" Baldcypress we see today are not old, however, due to the clearcutting of this species which took place in the early 1900's.

Baldcypress should be planted wherever a native wetland is created. They will grow on almost any soil including poorly drained muck. Their ability to tolerate compacted soils and other attributes makes them one of the easiest trees to preserve in place. They do remarkably well in irrigated lawns and obtain their best appearance on golf courses where they receive regular irrigation and fertilization. Baldcypress requires little pruning and typically has a single straight trunk. With all of these virtues they should be planted more often.

Delivery is included in Broward, Miami-Dade, and southern Palm Beach Counties.
