Mahogany

8' -12' height, 25 gallon pot, contact us for larger sizes - Swietenia mahogani

Mahogany makes a superb street or shade tree. It grows well in the alkaline soils and hot dry conditions of parking lots, but be careful to consider the large hard fruit capsules which may dent cars when they fall. The dark green crown is dense, rounded and compact when the tree is young and open and spreading when mature. The trunk is straight with dark gray to black bark. The wood is the strong and fabled Mahogany wood of commercial fame. The leaves are a compound leaf of delicate leaflets that give the canopy a moderately fine textured appearance.

Mahoganies grow in full sun to partial shade on a wide range of soils. They grow well near the sea. Mahoganies grow quickly when planted in fertile, irrigated and well-drained landscapes.

Mahogany has strong wood, however, the growth habit of the tree demands that they be well pruned periodically. Prune them to maintain a dominant central trunk and make sure that branches are widely spaced with u-shaped crotches.
