Canary Island Date Palm is sometimes called Pineapple Palm for the massive trunk that resembles an enormous pineapple when it first emerges. The palm not only has a massive trunk, but its large dense crown can have a spread of 30'. The stiff arching fronds and the regular pattern of leaf bases on the trunk add to the formal appearance of the palm making it an ideal choice for large-scale projects where a formal appearance with a Mediterranean flavor is desired.
Canary Island Date Palm grows best in moist fertile soil contrary to popular opinion. Some growers grow this palm quite well in the clay soil of South Dade County. However, the palm is tolerant of well-drained sands. The palm is able to withstand confined spaces for its roots such as you find in street tree plantings. It can be planted near the ocean but not near the front line dunes. Always plant it in full sun where it has sufficient room to grow to its eventual large size.
Large specimens of this palm are very expensive so be careful to give this palm the care it needs. This means proper pruning and fertilization. Canary Island Date Palms are very susceptible to potassium deficiency.
The dead spots and distorted leaf growth called "frizzling" on older fronds is usually caused by potassium deficiency.
Do not prune fronds higher than parallel to the ground plane. Fertilize with palm fertilizer 4 times each year.
Large specimen palms require special handling at time of installation. We have developed specifications to minimize the problems that can result from poor installation of this expensive but beautiful and striking palm.
